Read to Rise: Science of Reading (SoR)

Reading isn’t just an art; it’s a skill built on a solid foundation of cognitive and linguistic science. For decades, researchers have been studying how the brain learns to read, giving us a powerful, evidence-based approach to literacy instruction. It’s called the Science of Reading. This isn’t just another fad in education; it’s a proven framework that shows us exactly how to teach reading effectively. The Science of Reading tells us how students learn to read. Progression Partners shows you how to make it work for every student.

At Progression Partners, we believe every child deserves the keys to literacy—and every educator deserves the tools to unlock that success. Our READ to RISE: Science of Reading Training Series equips teachers, leaders, and schools with the research-based, responsive practices proven to accelerate reading achievement for all learners.

Understanding the Science of Reading: A Foundation for Lifelong Literacy

At Progression Partners, we believe in transforming literacy instruction to empower every student. Read to Rise: Science of Reading Training reflects our belief that literacy is more than a skill—it’s the foundation for growth, opportunity, and lifelong success. Grounded in the Science of Reading, this training equips educators with research-based, equity-centered strategies that help students move from struggling readers to confident learners. When we unlock the science behind how the brain learns to read, we give every child the chance not only to read—but to rise.

Our services are rooted in the Science of Reading (SoR), a comprehensive and interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research that explains how reading skills are developed and what happens in the brain during reading. This research draws from fields such as cognitive psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience. It provides guiding principles for effective instruction rather than being a single curriculum or teaching method.

What Is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading isn’t a program or a passing trend—it’s decades of research on how the human brain learns to read and how educators can best teach it. Backed by cognitive science, linguistics, and education studies, it gives us a clear, proven roadmap for helping students move from decoding words to truly understanding and enjoying text.

At Progression Partners, we know that reading instruction is most powerful when teachers feel confident using research-driven strategies, when schools create a culture where literacy is a shared priority, and when every student sees themselves reflected in the learning.

By blending the Science of Reading with an equity lens, we help educators unlock both skill and belonging—ensuring that all students, from emerging readers to high school learners, have the chance to succeed.

The Building Blocks of Skilled Reading

The Science of Reading identifies five essential components that work together to unlock reading success, often referred to as the “Five Pillars of Reading”

  • 1

Phonemic Awareness: The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.

  • 2

Phonics: Understanding the relationship between sounds and the letters that spell them (phonemes and graphemes), so students can decode with confidence.

  • 3

Fluency: The ability to read text smoothly, accurately, and with expression, which is essential for comprehension.

  • 4
Vocabulary: Knowing the meaning of words and how to use them, students can then understand what they’ve read.

    • *Reading comprehension relies on knowing approximately 98% of the words in a text, making vocabulary development critical.
  • 5

Comprehension: The ultimate goal of reading—the ability to make meaning, draw connections, and think critically about text.

These pillars are supported by key frameworks like Scarborough’s Reading Rope, which weaves word recognition (decoding) and language comprehension (including background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge) into skilled reading.

Bringing Evidence-Based Reading Instruction to You

At Progression Partners, we believe every child deserves the keys to literacy—and every educator deserves the tools to unlock that success. Our Read to Rise: Science of Reading Training Series goes beyond theory, giving schools and districts the hands-on support needed to transform reading instruction from the ground up.

Tailored Support by Grade-Level Bands

Because the needs of early readers differ from those in upper grades, our training is designed with grade-level specificity:

  • K–2: Building strong foundations in phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency.
  • 3–5: Expanding vocabulary, strengthening comprehension, and bridging foundational gaps.
  • 6–8: Supporting adolescent readers with strategies for fluency, syntax, and academic vocabulary.
  • 9–12: Advancing comprehension, critical thinking, and discipline-specific literacy to prepare students for college and careers.

Comprehensive Educator Support

We don’t just train teachers—we walk alongside them in classrooms, ensuring that strategies are applied, sustained, and have a transformative impact.

Group or Grade-Level Training

In collaborative sessions tailored for grade-band teams or instructional cohorts, educators will:

  • Understand how structured, explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and language comprehension build the reading brain
  • Translate theory into practice with strategies grounded in decades of evidence—so every
students, including multilingual learners and those with learning differences, can thrive
  • Collaborate to design lessons that are both research-aligned and immediately
    applicable in their classrooms.

In-Classroom Support

Our coaching takes training beyond the session and into classrooms for implementation through side-by-side modeling, observation, and feedback that bring strategies to life. Teachers receive guidance to strengthen practice, real-time modeling of structured literacy instruction, and support to address specific challenges.

We meet teachers where they are and provide layers of professional learning that ensure lasting impact:

  • One-on-One Educator Support – Personalized guidance to strengthen practice and address specific challenges.
  • Trainer-of-Trainer Development – Building internal capacity so districts can sustain Science of Reading practices long after training ends.

Why This Matters

A recent survey of K–5 educators showed that 90% saw measurable reading improvements after adopting the Science of Reading instruction—yet only 13% felt fully prepared, highlighting the urgent need for quality training and support. Rigorous evidence shows that explicit, systematic instruction can lead 95% of learners to become proficient readers, a stark contrast to conventional approaches that often miss struggling students. This is especially powerful for English learners and students with reading differences—when their instruction is aligned to how the brain reads, and profound gains follow.
